The fifth round of the peace talks between the Sudanese government and the
Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLM/A) began Wednesday in Machakos, 0 km southeast
of the Kenyan capital Nairobi.
The two sides are expected to centre on the issue of wealth and power haring
during the two-week talks.
The time has now come when the parties must begin to make the key decisions
that will ultimately bring peace to the people of the Sudan, Lazarus Sumbeiywo,
Kenyan special envoy for peace in the Sudan and chief negotiator,told Xinhua.
Both the Sudanese government and the SPLM/A have expressed theirwillingness
to find a final agreement on the issue during this round of talks.
Sumbeiywo said there was expectation to make progress at the talks, though they
are very thorny issues. These are the final negotiations on power and wealth
sharing and hoping that they will usher in the final peace agreement in the
Sudan, Mohammed Dirdeiry, Sudanese Deputy Ambassador to Kenya ,told Xinhua.
"There is a lot of seriousness this time and we must come up with something
tangible," SPLM/ A spokesman Samson Kwaje said.
Peace talks began last July in Kenya under the auspices of the IGAD, a seven-member
regional group in east Africa, consisting of Kenya, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Uganda,
Eritrea, Tanzania and the Sudan.
